Some of my most joyful production memories have been working with San Francisco’s midnight movie mistress, the multi-talented, Peaches Christ (Joshua Grannell). Writer, Film Director and drag queen, we first met when I attended one of Peaches’ legendary Midnight Mass movie screenings at the former Bridge Theatre in San Francisco whilst scouting on behalf of AND: Abandon Normal Devices Festival, UK.
In securing the European premiere and accompanying live show for their self-directed movie, All About Evil, starring Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll, Orange is the New Black), Mink Stole, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark) and Thomas Dekker, so began a rollercoaster of goofball projects in which I would inevitably appear in the ensemble - such is the responsibility when producing live performances and cost savings need to be made!
The highlights have been many. From talent-spotting to identify emerging performers (working with the likes of Cheddar Gorgeous, Anna Phylactic, Donna Trump and Miss Blair), being confronted by riot police who mistook a fake protest of puritans for a genuine mob, lap-dancing librarians in the cinema aisles, an audience member vomiting in disgust, eye-popping Orgasmatron contests, accusations of blasphemy, and dancing to ‘Tea for Two’ with Jinkx Monsoon as Little Edie (hoisting her on my shoulders for the finale).
As a gift following our first successful project, Peaches awarded me my drag name - The Lady Pudding - which makes me her drag daughter, little-known sibling of her more infamous children, Jinkx Monsoon and Bob the Drag Queen. If this were an episode of Dynasty I would be primed to return from obscurity at a Swiss finishing school to challenge their reign.
